Tampa Sx 2018- A First Look!

For the first time in 20 years Monster Energy AMA Supercross was back in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium and proved to be a great night of racing for everyone who came out! The long lane deep sandy section and the over under were unique to the Tampa track. There was a great rhythm section which alotted for riders like Baggett and Hill to bust out a quad and give them a few tenths of a second advantage from the rest of the field on Saturday night! Unfortunately Baggett over jumped the quad a bit during qualifying but was stopped by the Steve Matthes Memorial Net which diminished the damage and allowed him to get back on the track fairly quickly!

Tampa would make history with Chad Reed qualifying for his 228th start making Supercross history. He took the record from previous record holder Mike LaRocco. Reed missed qualifying for the night show in his heat race by one position and had to go to the LCQ. But proved his icon status by taking the hole shot and winning the LCQ. His but patch read 228 (check) symbolizing the accomplishment. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue caused him to DNF in the main but Reed was more stoked on that epic accomplishment in his home state.

The second round of East Coast Supercross got off to a much better start than week one in Arlington. At the first round a huge first turn pileup claimed one of the top contenders- Martin Davalos- in a tumultuous crash. Austin Forkner taking a heat race win looked ready for battle on this sandy Tampa track. The points leader Osbourne logged in another heat race win in Tampa! .RJ Hamshire got the holeshot but had Austin Forkner right on his heels. Forkner continue to dominate through the 250 Main and would take his first ever 250 overall with the top spot on the podium. Frenchman and Monster Energy Yamalube Star Yamaha rider Dylan Ferrandis would finish second- his first time on the podium as well. Zach Osborne would finish third. He was happy with his results and still maintains the points lead by five over Forkner.

The second 450 heat race unfortunately claimed your second in points 450 rider Cole Seely with a fracture to his pelvis and tailbone. A very unfortunate event for HRC Honda after Roczen was claimed at San Diego with his hand injury and is out for at least eight weeks. Musquin, Anderson and Tomac were very strong in the beginning of the 450 Main and the win could have gone to any of them. Cooper Webb qualified second in timed practice and was looking great in Tampa as well! How can we not talk about Justin Hill debuting on a 450! He came out swinging- winning his heat race and getting a great start in the main! Hill got Tomac for second and went down after a mistake trying to make a move on Musquin. The points leader Anderson didn’t get the greatest start and would struggle to catch up with the riders upfront for the entire main. Tomac and Musquin gave the crowd a great show by battling back and forth proving that they are both champion contenders. Tomac would take the win with Musquin in second and Anderson in third for the night. Webb, Wilson and Malcolm Stewart would log in their best finishes yet of 2018 at Tampa Sx!
